What was one activity you did this weekend? Explain in one paragraph. Include details about just one activity you did.

Example:

This weekend I played volleyball with some of my friends at an indoor gym. It was funny to play indoors because the ball bounces off the ceiling and the walls, unlike an outdoor volleyball court. Also, the floor is so hard that few people dive for the ball. One time during the night I had to serve for the game point, which was a little stressful. Overall, this was an enjoyable activity that I did this weekend.

Pick two characters to go on a blind date. Describe what their meeting would be like.

I. Topic Sentence
II. Supporting Detail
III. Supporting Detail
IV. Supporting Detail
V. Concluding Sentence

The characters that I have chosen for a blind date would be Mary Poppins and Winnie the Pooh. I suppose that Mary Poppins would be taller than Winnie the Pooh, so that might make things awkward at the beginning. I imagine that they would meet at a coffee shop and drink tea. Pooh would probably want to scoop honey into his tea, but Mary Poppins would likely think that a spoonful of sugar is a much better choice. They might have an argument about whether honey or sugar is better in their tea. However, they would eventually change the topic of conversation to singing, an activity which both enjoy. Winnie the Pooh and Mary Poppins would probably end up singing a cheery tune together and really enjoying each other's company in the end. Although they would not be interested in each other romantically, Winnie the Pooh and Mary Poppins could become life-long friends.  Mary Poppins and Winnie the Pooh would have a pleasant first date.

Questions of the day: Describe one time when you went to sledding or skiing. Make sure to write about only one time.

I can remember one great night when I went sledding with my family at Edina High School. My entire family was there along with one of my friends named Johnny Klobe. We went to an enormous hill behind the high school, which has three flights of stairs to the bottom. Our sleds sped down the hill and we could go very far. It was especially fun to make long chains, in which we'd put two or three sleds together, cling onto each others' damp snow-suites and hold on for dear life as we flew down the hill. After whipping down the hill for awhile we would have created a trail. If you kept your

Writing about History

Writing Prompt of the Day: Today's feast day is the Martyrs of Chalcedon. They were a group of 49 Christians killed under the Emperor Diocletian in 394. Explain some situations when you need courage as a Christian in today's world.

Example: I am trying to be a good Christian in the modern world. One way that I can be courageous is by being honest and truthful to my non-Christian friends. When they ask me about my Faith I can explain to them my beliefs and values. Second, I can pray before I eat in public. Even though it might feel embarrassing, it is a heroic action to pray in public. Third, another way to be a brave Christian in today's society is to pray at abortion clinics for an end to unjust killing of human children. Today's society is not outwardly brutal to Christians, but it still takes a great deal of strength to be a faithful follower of the Good Shepherd.

Today's Writing Prompt

Prompt: Describe an animal in detail.
Include specific parts of the animal or specific actions of the animal.
Be as specific as you can!

Example:

This summer I was walking through the natural history museum in Washington D.C. when I was stopped by a display case no bigger than a picture frame. In the case were five small bats: tiny, mouse-size creatures, complete with wings, bodies, and sharp teeth. I've never seen a bat up close, only swooping around in the darkness at night. It was strange to see these monkeys of the night up close. Even though they were no longer alive, each one peered out of the case at me with wide-open eyes. Their wings were almost as thin as a butterflies' wings, while their bodies are thick like a rat. They resembled flying dinosaurs much more than modern birds.

Here are some examples:

No: Bats are amazing.
Yes: Bats are amazing because they have heavy bodies, yet delicate butterfly wings hold them up.

No: Bats are spectacular.
Yes: Bats are spectacular because they can fly through the air like secret agents in the dark.

No:  I like bats because they are cute.
Yes:  I think bats are cute because they have funny, furry faces like mice.

Mary Fink - August 8, 2014

What was the best part of your summer?

My favorite memory from this summer was attending the Ordination Mass of ten priests from the order called the Institute of the Incarnate Word. I drove to Washington D.C. with my family on a road trip to see the ordination. We arrived in D.C. the night before the ordination. The sisters and brothers were having a party! They were eating pizza and singing with their guitars. We gladly joined their party. The next day we went to the ordination Mass. It was at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. Before the ceremony began we walked around the enormous church and saw all the breathtaking marble pillars, saint statues, and mosaics. The Mass itself was beautiful. with devoted priests, a famous old bishop to preach the homily, a large and melodious choir, and a nave completely packed with people. As the summer fades away, I know this event will be left in my memory for a long time.
